Animals age more rapidly than we do. A year is a long time in their lives relative to ours. We recommend an annual physical exam for your pet. The information we gather at each exam becomes part of your pet's medical history and can be critical when an emergency or sudden illness arises.
In the annual exam we check for significant weight loss - it can be an early warning sign of disease. Obesity is a common problem for older pets. We assess the condition of legs, hips, joints and spine. The hair and coat should appear healthy and well-groomed. Dull, dry, brittle hair or hair loss may indicate an underlying illness. We check the skin for infection or signs of external parasites (fleas, ticks, lice). It is important to listen to the chest for heart murmurs, irregular heartbeat and abnormal lung sounds as well as to palpate the abdomen for masses or pain. We examine the eyes, ears, nose and lymph nodes for signs of inflammation, infection or tumors and signs of cataracts or glaucoma. We evaluate your pet's teeth and check the color and condition of the gums. As many as 95% of all pets two years or older have periodontal disease.
After the examination is completed your veterinarian can discuss with you any abnormal findings and make recommendations for further actions.
Aging pets have health and maintenance requirements which differ from young animals. As animals get older their dietary needs change, they will require a higher quality protein source, lower energy levels and a change in the mineral/vitamin balance. As well there will be an increase in health related issues. With aging comes an increased risk of diseases such as arthritis, cancer, diabetes, heart ailments and dental problems.
Annual health examinations become more important as your pet gets older. As part of an annual exam for senior pets, screening tests of blood chemistry and survey radiographs may help in diagnosing preclinical disease. Many diseases, if diagnosed early, can be treated to minimize or stop any permanent damage. Your veterinarian can assist in selecting a diet which is suitable for your pet.
